British novelist, playwright and children's writer. Born Susan Lilian Johnstone, April 2, 1946, in Leicester, England; dau. of John and Grace Johnstone (Leicester bus conductors); m. Keith Townsend, 1964; m. Colin Broadway, 1986.
Began the bestselling "Adrian Mole" series with The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 (1982), followed by The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole (1984) and Adrian Mole, From Minor to Major (1991); also wrote Womberang (1979), Ear, Nose, and Throat (1989), Ten Tiny Fingers, Nine Tiny Toes (1990), (play) The Queen and I (1992), and Ghost Children (1997); struck with diabetes-induced blindness; launched web site providing counseling and services for people with sight problems (2002).
