African-American singer and actress. Born May 25, 1943, in New York, NY; m. Grahame Pratt, 1965; children: 2.

At 6, made national tv debut in series "Beulah" (1950); won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for Hallelujah, Baby! (1968); nominated for Tony as Best Actress in a Play for King Hedley II (2001); appeared as Kizzy on "Roots" (1977) and starred on "The Leslie Uggams Show" (1969).
