Waddy, Charis (1909–2004)
Islamic scholar and author. Born Sept 24, 1909, in Parramatta, Australia; died Aug 29, 2004; dau. of Stacy Waddy (headmaster); studied Arabic and Hebrew at Lady Margaret Hall, gaining a 1st-class degree; London University, PhD; never married.
The 1st woman to graduate in oriental languages from Oxford University, wrote the groundbreaking book, The Muslim Mind (1976, 3rd ed., 1991); also wrote Women in Muslim History (1980); was held in high esteem by Muslims worldwide.
