Yang Jiang (b. 1911)
Chinese critic, memoirist, translator and educator. Name variations: Yang Chiang. Born 1911 in China; studied at Qinghua University and in England and France; m. Qian Zhongshu (scholar, died 1998); children: daughter Qian Yuan (1937–1997, professor).
Taught university in Beijing and did scholarly work on Spanish, French, and English literature; her translations are regarded as masterpieces; works include The Slushy School of Spring (1976), the semi-autobiographical A Cadre School Life: Six Chapters (1982), which focuses on her experiences during the Cultural Revolution and has been praised for its irony and humor, and The Bath (1989); translations include Le Sage's Gil Blas (1956), Cervantes's Lazarillo de Tormes (1951), and Don Quixote (1978).
