Abbe, Kathryn (1919—)

American photographer. Born in New York City in 1919; grew up in Wallingford, Connecticut; twin sister of Frances McLaughlin-Gill; studied photography with Walter Civardi and graduated with a B.F.A., Pratt Institute, 1941; studied painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the New School for Social Research, 1939–41; married James Abbe, Jr. (a photographer and art historian); children: Tom (b. 1948), Lucinda (b. 1950), Eli (b. 1952).

In 1941, photographer Kathryn Abbe won Vogue's "Prix de Paris" contest; the following year, she began working with the magazine's fashion photographer Toni Frissell . As a freelancer from 1944 on, Abbe contributed photographs to Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, and Parents. Her subjects included actors, actresses, musicians, and especially children. She and her twin sister Frances McLaughlin-Gill spent three years working on a book about twins, which was published in 1980.
