Acton, Eliza (1799–1859)

English writer. Born in Battle, England, on April 17, 1799; died in Hampstead, on February 13, 1859.

During her early years, Eliza Acton wrote poetry, but she is best remembered as one of the first women to prepare a cookbook. Her popular work, Modern Cookery for Private Families (published in 1845), went through numerous editions. In 1857, she brought out her last work, The English Bread Book. Acton's cookery books influenced domestic-science expert Isabella Beeton (1836–1865).
