Balliol, Margaret (fl. 1300s)

Scottish royal. Name variations: Margherita of Taranto or Tarento. Flourished in the 1300s; daughter of Philipp or Philip of Tarento (d. 1332), prince of Tarent, andCatherine of Tarento ; married Edward Balliol (c. 1314–1363), king of the Scots (r. 1332–1338); married Francisco II del Balzo, duke of Andria.

On September 24, 1332, at Scone, Edward Balliol, husband of Margaret Balliol, was crowned king of the Scots by the English, but he fled three months later. Restored to the throne in 1333, he fled again the following year, then was restored once more in 1335. This time, Edward lasted three years before he bolted in 1338. He finally renounced all claims to the throne of Scotland in 1356.
