Claudine (1451–1514)
Claudine (1451–1514)
Ruler of Monaco. Born in 1451 in Monaco; died in 1514 in Monaco; daughter of Catalan Grimaldi, ruler of Monaco; married Lambert Grimaldi (a Genovese noble and cousin); children: John (later John II of Monaco), Lucien, and Augustin.
Claudine was born into the ruling Grimaldi family of Monaco, a small independent principality on the Mediterranean coast south of France. The Grimaldis were one of the leading families of Genoa; before Claudine's birth, they had seized Monaco from the French and set themselves up as its ruling clan. As her father's only legitimate heir, Claudine succeeded her father as ruler on his death in 1657. Since she was only six years old, the government was run in her name by regents, who arranged her marriage to her cousin Lambert Grimaldi. Lambert was named seigneur, or lord, of Monaco, and coruled with Claudine when she came of age. The couple had three sons, all of whom succeeded their mother.
