Isabella (b. 1180)

Noblewoman and poet of France. Born in 1180 in southern France.

Isabella was a noblewoman who wrote troubadour poetry during the height of the troubadour period. Unfortunately, almost nothing is known about her. She was born in 1180, possibly in one of the Christian kingdoms in the East. Isabella probably met the troubadour and smith Elias Cairel, with whom she composed tensons, in Italy around 1220. Only one of Isabella's poems has survived, a tenson with Elias, in which the two discuss the love they once had, and analyze what went wrong with their affair; Isabella's voice in this poem is forthright and blunt, telling Elias that he was at fault because he was false and that she now has no use for him.
