Japha, Louise (1826–1889)
German pianist. Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1826; died in 1889; married Friedrich Langhans (divorced 1874).
Like her lifelong friend Johannes Brahms, Louise Japha was born in Hamburg. She studied there first and later with Clara Schumann . On her many European tours, Japha was particularly appreciated in Paris for her performances of the music of Robert Schumann. In 1868, she participated in the first public performance in Paris of the Brahms Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34. After divorcing the violinist Friedrich Langhans in 1874, she lived in Wiesbaden as a teacher.
