English writer and artist. Name variations: Sarah Bowdich; Mrs. T.E. Bowdich. Born Sarah Wallis in Colchester, England, on September 10, 1791; died in Erith, Kent, England, on September 22, 1856; daughter of John Eglintin Wallis; married Thomas Edward Bowdich (a naturalist), in 1813 (died 1824); married Robert Lee, in 1829.
An English writer and artist, Sarah Lee was born Sarah Wallis in 1791 in Colchester, England. In 1813, she married the naturalist Thomas Edward Bowdich and accompanied him to Africa in 1814, 1815, and 1823. Following his death in 1824, she married Robert Lee. A popularizer of natural science, Sarah Lee wrote Taxidermy (1820), Excursions in Madeira and Porto Santo (1825), Memoirs of Baron Cuvier (1833), and Adventures in Australia (1851). She also wrote and illustrated The Fresh-water Fishes of Great Britain (1828).
