Born on October 15, 1527, in Coimbra; died four days after giving birth on July 12, 1545, in Valladolid, Castile and Leon, Spain; daughter of João III or John III the Pious, king of Portugal (r. 1521–1557), and Catherine (1507–1578, daughter of Philip I of Spain); married Philip II (1527–1598), king of Spain (r. 1556–1598), and king of Portugal as Philip I (r. 1580–1598), on November 12, 1543; children: Charles (1545–1568).
Mary of Portugal was born in 1527, the daughter of John III the Pious, king of Portugal (r. 1521–1557), and Catherine , the daughter of Philip I, king of Spain. She married Philip II, the future king of Spain, in 1543. Mary of Portugal died four days after giving birth to her son Charles (Don Carlos) in 1545; he was born epileptic, as well as lame, with one leg shorter than the other.
