The name of Montanaria, a professional lay book illustrator, is found in a business contract dated 1272 from Bologna, the flourishing intellectual center of Italy in the 13th century. A manuscript calligrapher, she is referred to as "Montanaria, wife of Onesto" in the contract, in which she agrees to prepare a book for an important book manufacturer named Bencivenne of Florence.
