German silent-film star . Born Oswalda Stäglich in Berlin, Germany, in 1897; died in 1948.

One of Germany's most popular silent stars during the 1920s, Ossi Oswalda was a protégé of the great German director Ernst Lubitsch, who is also credited with discovering Pola Negri . Oswalda was a model and chorus dancer before making her film debut in Nacht des Grauens (1916). Particularly memorable among her Lubitsch collaborations are The Oyster Princess and The Doll (both 1919). Like many silent-screen performers, Oswalda did not survive the advent of sound and retired in 1933.
