Yugoslav politician. Born Milka Malada in Croatia in 1924.
The first woman ever to serve as prime minister of a Communist country (Croatia), Milka Planinc was born Milka Malada in 1924. In 1943, during World War II, the 19-year-old Planinc joined Marshal Tito's Liberation Army. She began her political career after the war as a member of the League of Yugoslav Communists. Gradually working her way up through the ranks, she eventually became head of the League and a member of the National Parliament, where she earned a reputation as a tough politician. She took over her post as prime minister of Croatia in May 1982, following the inauguration of a new policy to rotate senior government posts to nationals within the various Yugoslavian provinces. She served until May 15, 1986.
