Ponomareva-Romashkova, Nina (1929—)
Soviet discus thrower. Name variations: Nina Ponomaryeva-Romashkova; Nina Romashkova. Born on April 27, 1929.
Nina Ponomareva-Romashkova of the USSR won the Olympic gold medal in the discus in Helsinki in 1952 with a throw of 51.42. Her teammate Yelizaveta Bagryantseva won the silver. In the Melbourne Games in 1956, Olga Fikotová , who had trained under Nina, won the gold medal for Czechoslovakia. Ponomareva-Romaskova, who took home the bronze, was devastated by the defeat. In 1960, age 31, Ponomareva-Romashkova returned to the Olympic field once more, this time in Rome; with a throw of 55.10, she won gold once more. Tamara Press won the silver, while Lia Manoliu of Rumania won the bronze.
