Cuban runner and model. Name variations: Ana Quirot Moret. Pronunciation: KEE-rote. Born Ana Fidelia Quirot Moret on March 23, 1963, in Cuba.
One of the most famous athletes in Cuba, Ana Quirot won the bronze medal in the 800 meters in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1993, a kerosene stove exploded as she was lighting it, and she suffered third-degree burns over 40% of her body while seven months pregnant. Though she had no memory of the explosion, she lost the baby, spent three months in the hospital, and was badly scarred. Nine months later, Quirot finished second in her first race back. In the summer of 1995, she won the World championship, and in 1996, at the Atlanta Olympics, she won the silver medal in the 800 meters; the gold went to Svetlana Masterkova of Russia.
