Byzantine empress. Name variations: Sophia Monteferrata; Monferrato; Empress of Nicaea. Born of Italian ancestry; became second wife of her cousin John VIII Paleologus (1391–1448), emperor of Nicaea (r. 1425–1448), then divorced. John VIII's first wife was Anna of Moscow (1393–1417); his third was Maria of Trebizond (d. 1439).
