Physician who with Evarts Graham first showed the carcinogenic properties of the tar from tobacco smoke in mice. Their mouse studies were followed with studies in other animals, all showing that cigarette smoking could cause cancer and other diseases. This led to a statement by the Surgeon General of the United States linking tobacco smoking with these diseases and to several decades of near-constant fighting between tobacco companies and medical researchers.
