Rokitansky, Hans, Freiherr von

Rokitansky, Hans, Freiherr von , Austrian bass; b. Vienna, March 8, 1835; d. Schloss Laubegg, Styria, Nov. 2, 1909. He received his training in Bologna and Milan. After making his concert debut in London in 1856, he made his operatic debut at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris in 1857 as Oroveso. He sang in Prague from 1862 to 1864. From 1864 to 1893 he was a member of the Vienna Court Opera, and then taught at the Vienna Cons. from 1894. Among his finest roles were Sarastro, Leporello, Caspar, Heinrich, and the Landgrave. His brother, Victor, Freiherr von Rokitansky (b. Vienna, July 9, 1836; d. there, July 17, 1896), was a singer and composer of songs who taught at the Vienna Cons. (1871–80).
