SIDELIGHTS:

Lorne Zeiler writes for a variety of business publications and is the author of a nonfiction book for young adults titled Hearts of Gold: Stories of Courage, Dedication and Triumph from Canadian Olympians. The book is a collection of twenty stories from as many summer and winter Olympians who faced and overcame individual challenges, both physical and mental. In some cases the athletes chose not to compete or finish their events. Some of the profiles include: Sammy Luftspring, a Jewish athlete who protested Nazi treatment of Jews by not participating in the 1936 Olympics; in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Larry Lemieux dropped out of his yachting competition to save a fellow racer; and Swimmer Sylvie Frechette overcame personal loss to compete in the 1991 Barcelona Summer Olympics and then was denied her gold medal due to an error by the judge in entering her score.

The book spans a century of these and other stories. Of Zeiler's book, Janet Toope commented in a review for Resource Links: "The stories are well written and inspiring. They give some good biographical information on the athletes as well as chronicling their Olympic endeavors." Ann Ketcheson wrote of Zeiler's subjects in an interview for CM: Canadian Review of Materials online that "all are people who followed their dreams and their highest instincts, thereby providing examples of excellence for all of us."
