prix the French word for ‘prize’.
Prix de Rome a prize awarded annually by the French government in a competition for artists, sculptors, architects, and musicians; it was founded by Louis XIV in 1666 for painters and sculptors, and extended in 1720 to include architects, and in 1803 musicians and engravers. The name, literally ‘prize of Rome’, was given because the winner of the first prize in each category is funded for a period of study in Rome.
Prix Goncourt an award given annually for a work of French literature, named after the de Goncourt brothers, French novelists and critics of the 19th century.
