Companions (Arab. Aṣḥāb or Ṣaḥāba). The men closest to Muḥammad during his time in Mecca and Madīna; foremost among these, the first four caliphs (khalīfa): Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and ʿAlī b. Abī Tālib. See also ṢAHĀBA.
