I Stand Alone
I Stand Alone ★★ Seul contre tous 1998 (R)
Loud and REPULSIVE drama has unemployed butcher Chevalier (Nahon) descending into madness at warp speed when he can't find work. The brutal approach Noe takes distracts, rather than intrigues, as the “hero” is such a low-life loser. His hate-filled narration is accompanied by wild camera moves and loud gunshot booms ending each scene. A 30-second warning plastered before the film's grisly climax is not only unique but warranted when the least of Chevalier's crimes is maliciously kicking his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach. Considered a continuation to Noe's 1991 short feature entitled “Carne.” French with English subtitles. 93m/C VHS . Philippe Nahon, Blandine Lenoir, Frankye Pain, Martine Audrain; D: Gaspar Noe; W: Gaspar Noe; C: Dominique Colin.
