Donostia, Josée Antonio de (real name, José Gonzalo Zulaica y Arregui)

Donostia, Josée Antonio de (real name, Josée Gonzalo Zulaica y Arregui), Spanish organist, musicologist, and composer; b. San Sebastián, Jan. 10, 1886; d. Lecároz, Navarre, Aug. 30, 1956. He studied with Echazarrá at the Lecároz Franciscan Coll., Esquerra in Barcelona, Gaviola in San Sebastián, and Cools and Roussel in Paris. He worked in Toulouse (1936), Paris (1939–40), and Bayonne (1941–43) as an organist and choirmaster, then became head of the folklore dept. of Barcelona’s Spanish Inst. of Musicology (1943), where he brought out monographs and eds. of Basque folk song.

(1936); Poema de la Pasion for 2 Sopranos, Chorus, and English Horn (1937); Missa pro defunctis for Chorus and Organ (1945).
