Dowd, (Eric) Ronald (b Sydney, NSW, 1914; d Sydney, NSW, 1990). Australian tenor. Début 1948, Perth (Hoffman). Toured Australia singing Florestan, Alfredo, Cavaradossi, Lohengrin, etc. Joined SW Opera in London 1956. Sang Mahony in f. Brit. p of Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (SW 1963). Created Mosbie in Goehr's Arden Must Die (Hamburg, 1969). CG début 1960. Joined Australian Opera and sang Pierre in Prokofiev's War and Peace at opening of Sydney Opera House, 1973. Was also noted for his singing of Elgar's Gerontius, often with Barbirolli.
