Engel, Hans

Engel, Hans, eminent German musicologist; b. Cairo, Egypt, Dec. 20, 1894; d. Marburg, May 15, 1970. He studied at the Akademie der Tonkunst in Munich with Klose and at the Univ. of Munich with Sandberger (Ph.D., 1925, with the diss. Die Entwicklung des deutschen Klavierkonzertes von Mozart bis Liszt; publ. in Leipzig, 1927); completed his Habilitation at the Univ. of Greifswald in 1926; then taught there (1926–35). He was on the faculty of the Univ. of Konigsberg (1935–46) and the Univ. of Marburg (1946–63).
