Fischer, Iván, Hungarian conductor, brother of Adam Fischer; b. Budapest, Jan. 20, 1951. He studied cello and composition at the Bela Bartok Cons, in Budapest (1965–70); then took lessons in conducting with Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music and with Harnoncourt in Salzburg. During the 1975–76 season, he conducted concerts in Milan, Florence, Vienna, and Budapest; beginning in 1976, he filled engagements with the BBC Sym. Orch. in London and the BBC regional orchs. From 1979 to 1982 he was co-conductor of the Northern Sinfonia Orch. in Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1983 he became music director of the Budapest Festival Orch. Also in 1983 he made his first appearance in the U.S. as a guest conductor with the Los Angeles Phil. He was music director of the Kent Opera (1984–88), and then its artistic director. From 1989 to 1995 he was principal guest conductor of the Cincinnati Sym. Orch.
