Gautier de Coincy, French trouvère; b. Coincyl’Abbaye, 1177 or 1178; d. Soissons, Sept. 25, 1236. He entered the Benedictine monastery of St.-Médard in Soissons in 1193. He was made prior in Vic-sur-Aisne in 1214 and abbot in Soissons in 1233. His Miracles deMostre-Dame (1214–33) is an extensive verse narrative with songs. He also composed sacred chansons. He was an important contributor to the genre of sacred, Marian songs in vernacular settings.
