Gebauer, François René
Gebauer, François René, French bassoonist, pedagogue, and composer, brother of Michel Joseph Gebauer; b. Versailles, March 15, 1773; d. Paris, July 28, 1845. He was a pupil of his brother and of Devienne. In 1788 he became a member of the band of the Swiss Guard in his native city. In 1790 he settled in Paris as a musician in the National Guard. After playing in theater orchs., he joined the orch. of the Opéra about 1799, remaining in it until 1826. He also played in the Imperial chapel orch. until 1830, and was a prof, at the Cons. (1795–1802; 1824–38). Gebauer composed 13 bas-soon concertos and various chamber works, including solo bassoon pieces.
