Gebel, Georg, German composer; b. Brieg, Silesia, Oct. 25, 1709; d. Rudolstadt, Sept. 24, 1753. He studied with his father. He was organist at St. Maria Magdalene in Breslau, and Kapellmeister to the Duke of Oels. In 1735 he joined Count Briihrs orch. at Dresden, where he met Hebenstreit, the inventor of the “Pantaleon,” and learned to play that instrument. In 1747 he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Prince of SchwarzburgRudolstadt. He wrote a number of light operas (to German rather than Italian librettos, thus upholding the national tradition), and more than 100 syms., partitas, and concertos.
