Goodman, Roy, English conductor, violinist, and keyboard player; b. Guilford, Surrey, Jan. 26, 1951. After serving as a chorister at King’s Coll., Cambridge (1959-64), he studied at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1968-70) and the Berkshire Coll. of Education (1970-71). He then was director of music at the Univ. of Kent and of early music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and then founded the Brandenburg Consort in 1975. From 1979 to 1986 he was co-director of the Parley of Instruments. He was principal conductor of the Hanover Band from 1986 to 1994, an orch. specializing in period instrument performances of scores from the Baroque and Classical eras. He also conducted operas from that period, especially those by Handel and Mozart. In 1988 he became music director of the European Union Baroque Orch. He also was music director of the Umea Sym. Orch. in Sweden from 1996.
