Heller, James G., American composer; b. New Orleans, Jan. 4, 1892; d. Cincinnati, Dec. 19, 1971. He studied at Tulane Univ. in New Orleans (B.A., 1912), the Univ. of Cincinnati (M.A., 1914), the Hebrew Union Coll. (Rabbi, 1916), and the Cincinnati Cons. (Mus.D., 1934). For 12 years, he wrote the program notes for the Cincinnati Sym. Orch.; then taught musicology at the Cincinnati Cons, of Music. Among his works were Elegy and Pastorale for Voice and String Orch. (Cincinnati, Dec. 30, 1934); String Quartet; Violin Sonata; Jewish services (New Union Hymnal, 1930-32).
