Hughes, Owain Arwel
Hughes, Owain Arwel, Welsh conductor, son of Arwel Hughes; b. Cardiff, March 21, 1942. He first studied at Univ. Coll. in Cardiff; then (1964–66) at the Royal Coll. of Music in London, where his teachers included Boult and Harvey Philips; subsequently studied with Kempe in London and Haitink in Amsterdam. He made his London debut in 1968, then appeared as a guest conductor with leading English orchs. He alsoconducted at the Welsh National Opera and the English National Opera. In 1977 he became music director of the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales. He also was assoc. conductor of the BBC Welsh Sym. Orch. (from 1980) and music director of the Huddersfield Choral Soc. (1980–86). He then was assoc. conductor of the Philharmonia Orch. of London (from 1987).
