Jochum, (Maria) Veronica
Jochum, (Maria) Veronica, gifted German pianist, daughter of Eugen Jochum; b. Berlin, Dec. 6, 1932. She studied piano with Eliza Hansen and then with Maria Landes-Hindemith at the Munich Staatliche Hochschule für Musik (M.A., 1955; concert diploma, 1957). After additional studies with Edwin Fischer in Lucerne (1958-59), she completed her training with Rudolf Serkin in Philadelphia (1959-61). She commenced her career in Germany in 1954; made tours of Europe from 1961. Following her successful N.Y. debut as soloist in Beethoven’s 1st Piano Concerto with Gerard Schwarz and the Y Chamber Sym. (March 21, 1981), she made appearances throughout the U.S. She maintained an intriguing repertoire, ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Bartok and Schoenberg; she also championed lesser-known scores by such diverse composers as Clara Schumann and Ernst Krenek; likewise performed new works, including the premiere of Gunther Schuller’s 2nd Piano Concerto (1982).
