Klebanov, Dmitri

Klebanov, Dmitri, outstanding Ukrainian composer; b. Kharkov, July 25, 1907; d. there, June 6, 1987. He studied with Bogatyrev at the Kharkov Inst. for Music and Drama, graduating in 1926. After playing viola in Leningrad (1927–28), he returned to Kharkov as director for several musical comedy theaters and as a teacher at the Cons. (1934-73; prof., 1960; emeritus, 1973). He wrote the Ukrainian State Hymn. Klebanov was president of the local Composer’s Union (1945–49).
