Long, Kathleen
Long, Kathleen, English pianist and teacher; b. Brentford, July 7, 1896; d. Cambridge, March 20, 1968. She was a pupil of Herbert Sharpe at the Royal Coll. of Music in London (1910–16). Following her debut in 1915, she pursued a fine career as a soloist with orchs., as a recitalist, and as a chamber music artist. Her tours took her throughout Europe and North America. She also taught at the Royal Coll. of Music (1920–64). In 1950 she was awarded the palmes academiques of France and in 1957 was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Long was an admirable interpreter of Bach, Scarlatti, Mozart, Schumann, and the French school, especially of Fauré. She also championed the cause of British music.
