Matthaei, Karl
Matthaei, Karl , Swiss organist and musicologist; b. Olten, April 23, 1897; d. Winterthur, Feb. 8, 1960. He studied piano and organ at the Basel Cons., and also took courses in musicology there with Karl Nef. He then went to Leipzig, where he pursued his organ studies with Strube (1920–23). He subsequently was organist in Wadenswil. From 1925 he was organist and director of the Winterthur music school; from 1938 served also as organist of the city church. He ed. j. Pachelbel: Ausgewählte Orgelwerke (4 vols., Kassel, 1928–36), M. Praeto-rius: Sämtliche Orgelwerke (Wolfenbüttel, 1930), and j.j. Froberger: Ausgewählte Orgelwerke (Kassel, 1932). He also ed. a Bach- Gedenkschrift (Zürich, 1950). He publ. the books Vom Orgelspiel (Leipzig, 1936) and Die Baugeschichte der Stadtkirchenorgel in Winterthur (Winterthur, 1941).
