Murray, Bain
Murray, Bain, American composer and teacher; b. Evanston, 111., Dec. 26, 1926; d. Cleveland, Jan. 16, 1993. He was a student of Elwell at Oberlin (Ohio) Coll. (A.B., 1951), of Thompson and Piston at Harvard Univ. (A.M., 1952), and of Boulanger in Paris. He taught at Harvard Univ. (1954–55), Oberlin Coll. (1955–60), and Cleveland State Univ. (from 1960), where he was head of its theory and composition dept. (from 1966).

The Legend, opera-oratorio (1986; Cleveland, May 8, 1987); Mary Stuart: A Queen Betrayed, opera (Cleveland, March 1, 1991); Peter Pan, ballet; Epitaph for Strings; 2 string quartets; Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano; Woodwind Quintet; piano pieces; many choral works; song cycles.
