Osborne, George Alexander, Irish pianist, teacher, and composer; b. Limerick, Sept. 24, 1806; d. London, Nov. 16, 1893. After theological training, he took up the piano. He taught in Brussels before going to Paris in 1826 to study with Pixis (piano) and Fétis (harmony and counterpoint), and then completed his piano studies with Kalkbrenner. He was active in the circle of such notables as Chopin, Rossini, Berlioz, and Liszt. In 1843 he settled in London as a pianist and teacher. He became particularly well- known for his championship of the music of Chopin. Osborne pubi, the book Reminiscences of Chopin (1880). Among his compositions were 2 operas, orch. pieces, chamber music, including duos for violin and piano in collaboration with Bériot, and songs.
