Polisi, Joseph W(illiam)
Polisi, Joseph W(illiam) , American bassoonist and music educator; b. N.Y., Dec. 30, 1947. He had primary lessons in bassoon with his father, William Polisi, principal bassoonist of the N.Y. Phil. He then turned to legal studies, and took a course in political science at the Univ. of Conn. (B.A., 1969) and international relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts Univ. (M.A., 1970). He then resumed his musical training at Yale Univ. (M.M., 1973; M.M.A., 1975; D.M.A., 1980), and also studied bassoon with Maurice Allard at the Paris Cons. (1973–74). He performed widely as a soloist and chamber music player, and also taught at the Univ. of Nev. (1975–76). He then was executive officer of the Yale Univ. School of Music (1976–80), and subsequently dean of faculty at the Manhattan School of Music (1980–83). After serving as dean of the Univ. of Cincinnati (Ohio) Coll.-Cons. of Music (1983–84), he became president of the Juilliard School in N.Y. (1984).
