Remy, Alfred , German-American writer on music and editor; b. Elberfeld, March 16, 1870; d. N.Y., Feb. 26, 1937. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1882. He studied at the City Coll. of N.Y. (B.A., 1890), received private instruction in piano, violin, and theory (1890–96), and completed his education at Columbia Univ. (M.A., 1905). He was music critic of Vogue and music ed. of The Lookder-On (1895–97); taught music and modern languages at various N.Y. institutions (from 1896). He was music ed. of the New International Encyclopaedia (1901–30) and ed.-in-chief of the 3rd ed. of Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians (1919).
