Schneider, Peter
Schneider, Peter, Austrian conductor; b. Vienna, March 26, 1939. He received training in conducting from Swarowsky at the Vienna Academy of Music. In 1959 he made his debut conducting Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Salzburg Landestheater. He was named to the position of first conductor at the Heidelberg Theater in 1961, and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf in 1968. From 1978 to 1985 he was Generalmusikdirektor in Bremen. He conducted at the Bayreuth Festival for the first time in 1981, and led a Ring cycle there in 1987. From 1985 to 1987 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Mannheim National Theater. He was a conductor with the Vienna State Opera during its visit to London’s Covent Garden and Tokyo in 1986. From 1993 to 1998 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. As a guest conductor, he appeared with various opera companies in Europe and the U.S.
