Schönzeler, Hans-Hubert
Schönzeler, Hans-Hubert, German conductor and musicologist; b. Leipzig, June 22, 1925; d. London, 1997. He went to Australia as a youth, and studied conducting with Goossens at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Sydney; later traveled in Europe, where he received further instruction in conducting with Kubelik, with Zecchi in Hilversum, and with Kempen in Siena. He eventually made his home in London, where he led the 20th-Century Ensemble (1957–62). In 1967 he was appointed deputy chief conductor of the West Australian Sym. Orch. in Perth, while continuing his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe. He publ. Bruckner (London and N.Y., 1970; rev. ed., 1978), Dvofrák (London, 1984), Furtwängler (London, 1987), and Zu Bruckners IX. Symphonie: die Krakauer Skizzen/Bruckner’s 9th Symphony: the Cracow Sketches (Vienna, 1987).
