Shore, Bernard (Alexander Royle) (b London, 1896; d Hereford, 1985). Eng. va.-player. Studies interrupted by war; on return to RCM studied va., hn. and cond. Also had va. tuition from Tertis. Joined Queen's Hall Orch. 1922; début as soloist 1925. Prin. va. BBC SO 1930–40. Prof. of va., RCM. Mus. dir., Rural Mus. Schools Assoc. Inspector of Schools and Staff Inspector, Ministry of Education 1948–59. Composer of vn. pieces and songs. Author of notable character-studies of conds. in The Orchestra Speaks (1938), also of Sixteen Symphonies (1949). CBE 1955.
