Škerjanc, Lucijan Marija

Skerjanc, Lucijan Marija , Slovenian pianist, conductor, teacher, writer on music, and composer; b. Graz, Dec. 17, 1900; d. Ljubljana, Feb. 27, 1973. He studied composition in Vienna with Marx and in Paris with d’Indy. He became a music teacher in Ljubljana in 1922, where he was a teacher of composition at the Cons. (1926–40) and at the Academy of Music (1940–70), serving as rector of the latter (1945–47). He was conductor of the Glasbena Matica orch. society (1925–45), and director of the Slovene Philharmonia (1950–55). Much of his music reflects neo-Romantic trends, with some impressionistic colors; in later works he also utilized 12-note techniques.
