Solum, John (Henry)

Solum, John (Henry), American flutist and teacher; b. New Richmond, Wise, May 11, 1935. He studied flute with William Kincaid in Philadelphia (1953–58) and was a student at Princeton Univ. (B.A., 1957); he also received instruction in harmony, counterpoint, composition, and musicology. He made his debut in 1953. In 1957 he appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orch. In 1959 he made his N.Y. recital debut. In subsequent years, he toured all over the world as a soloist with orchs., as a chamber music artist, and as a recitalist. He taught at Vassar Coll. (1969–71). After teaching at Ind. Univ. (1973) and the Oberlin (Ohio) Coll. Cons. of Music (1976), he again taught at Vassar Coll. (from 1977). From 1979 to 1989 he was co-director of the Bath (England) Summer School of Baroque Music. He also was active with the Conn. Early Music Festival from 1982. His repertoire ranges from Bach, Handel, Telemann, and Vivaldi to Honegger, Ibert, Jolivet, and Sir Malcolm Arnold.
