Vesque von Püttlingen, Johann

Vesque von Püttlingen, Johann, Austrian composer; b. Opole, Poland, July 23, 1803; d. Vienna, Oct. 29, 1883. He studied law in Vienna, and became a councillor of state. At the same time he studied with Moscheles (piano) and Sechter (theory), and made his mark as a composer of operas, under the pseudonym J. Hoyen. He also publ. a book on musical copyright, Das musikalische Autorrecht (Vienna, 1864).

dramatic: Opera (all 1stperf. in Vienna unless otherwise given) Turandot (Oct. 3, 1838); Johanna d’Arc (Dec. 30, 1840); Liebeszauber (1845); Ein Abenteuer Carls des Zweiten (Jan. 12, 1850); Der lustige Rat (Weimar, April 12, 1852). OTHER: Orch. music; 2 masses; 3 string quartets; some 300 songs; piano pieces.
