Volckmar, Wilhelm (Adam Valentin)
Volckmar, Wilhelm (Adam Valentin), German organist, teacher, and composer; b. Hersfeld, Dec. 26, 1812; d. Homberg, near Kassel, Aug. 27, 1887. He received his training from his father. In 1835 he settled at Homberg, where he taught music and played organ; toured extensively as an organ virtuoso. In 1846 he received an honorary doctorate; was made a prof, in 1868. He publ. an Orgelschule (Leipzig, 1863) and other books, and also ed. various organ works. His own compositions total nearly 700 works, including organ syms., concertos, 36 sonatas, and liturgical pieces, as well as many orch. and vocal works.
