Volkonsky, Andrey (Mikhaylovich) (b Geneva, 1933). Swiss-born Russ. composer, pianist, conductor, and harpsichordist. Co-founder with Barshay of Moscow Chamber Orch. Influenced by Schoenberg, Boulez, Berio, etc. and encountered difficulties from Soviet authorities because of modern trend of his works. Founded Madrigal, early mus. ens. of Moscow Phil. Emigrated to Israel 1973. Works incl. Conc. for Orch., cantata Dead Souls, Serenade to an Insect for chamber orch., str. qts., pf. sonata, and music-theatre pieces.
